[mdtoday = Reporter Choi Min-seok] Many people say they are not satisfied even after successfully losing weight. This is because although the number on the scale has dropped, the actual appearance in the mirror differs from what they expected. In particular, many people are bound to worry about their appearance due to love handles, a widened waistline, and love handles. It is important to remember that these issues are more related to body proportions and lines than to weight. Therefore, interest in body shape design has recently been growing, rather than simply focusing on weight loss.

In reality, even with the same weight, the impression can be completely different depending on the position of the waistline, the balance between the pelvis and abdomen, and the curve of the side profile. If weight has been lost but the waistline still appears straight or fat remains in specific areas, satisfaction with the overall silhouette is bound to decrease. For this reason, recently, the type of body line achieved has become a more important criterion than simply how many kilograms were lost.

However, there are cases where it is difficult to achieve desired proportions through exercise and diet alone. In particular, for body types where fat accumulates intensively in specific areas, the body lines often do not change easily even after weight loss. Areas where fat is difficult to lose, such as the abdomen, flanks, outer thighs, and upper arms, can significantly influence the overall impression of the body. In such cases, liposuction is a solution worth considering.

Liposuction is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries worldwide. It is a method that physically reduces subcutaneous fat in specific areas, such as the abdomen, thighs, upper arms, and face, to induce a more refined body shape. Because it focuses on improving lines and correcting proportions rather than simple weight loss, it is often approached as a procedure for body contouring purposes.

In particular, liposuction can help create a smoother silhouette by reducing volume in specific areas, enhancing the contrast between the waist and hips, or refining uneven lines. Many also expect high satisfaction as it allows for contour changes in areas that were difficult to improve through exercise alone. However, liposuction is strictly a procedure that aids in body shape transformation; it does not create a state where the body no longer stores fat.

In fact, if food intake increases again after the procedure and late-night eating, drinking, sleep deprivation, and reduced physical activity persist, the remaining fat cells can enlarge again. This means that simply removing fat does not mean the management of lifestyle habits is finished. Liposuction is a procedure designed to improve body shape balance by reducing fat in specific areas, rather than serving as a substitute for the entire course of obesity treatment. Therefore, metabolic health issues such as visceral fat, blood sugar control, fatty liver, and dyslipidemia require separate management.

Furthermore, after the procedure, managing eating patterns is more important than the amount of food consumed. Patterns such as abstaining from food all week only to binge eat on the weekend, or starving oneself all day only to binge eat late at night, can amplify fluctuations in blood sugar and insulin levels. Since insulin is involved in the process of energy storage, the likelihood of fat reaccumulation may also increase if these patterns are repeated.

Caution is also required regarding the intake of refined carbohydrates and sugars. White bread, cookies, sweet drinks, desserts, and late-night snacks are rapidly absorbed and provide a short-lived feeling of fullness, making it easy to induce further consumption. Frequent alcohol consumption can also create an environment unfavorable for maintaining one's physique. Ultimately, to maintain the perfect body line for a long time after liposuction, it is more important to change lifestyle patterns that cause the body to store fat than to focus on the fat cells themselves.

Dr. Lee Jae-won, Director of ByOne Clinic, stated, “Recently, there are many cases where people consider liposuction from the perspective of body shape design rather than simple weight loss.” He added, “However, liposuction does not end with the procedure itself; a more satisfactory body line can be achieved only when it is followed by lifestyle habits and body shape maintenance.”
